Ground Developments Ltd has begun remedial works on the remaining sites within the Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area of Glasgow

Ground Developments Ltd (GDL) has commenced remedial works within the Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area for Glasgow City Council and principal contractor Morgan Sindall Infrastructure – the largest project of its type in the UK outside of London which is set to be complete by 2020.

The overall Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area has plans for 1.000 homes, a school, shops and a pedestrian bridge into the city centre. Most of the site has already been remediated and now GDL is remediating the areas referred to as the GAP sites. These sites were not part of the initial remediation contract due to the presence of buildings such as a church and schools, which have now been demolished.

Working in line with the engineering consultancy SWECO’s remediation strategy and under their instruction on-site, GDL has been employed by Morgan Sindall Infrastructure to remediate the outstanding areas.

The programme of works is expected to run for 28 weeks and it includes:

  • Excavation of contaminated materials;
  • Screening and picking of deleterious materials to retain as much material on-site as possible;
  • Modifying site-won materials where possible to alter their geotechnical and geoenvironmental properties to allow them to be reused on-site;
  • Exporting non-hazardous materials off-site where deemed unsuitable for site reuse.

Kevin Mackenzie, managing director of GDL, commented: “We are delighted to provide our innovative ground improvement expertise and solutions to the Sighthill GAP project for our partners Morgan Sindall Infrastructure and overall client Glasgow City Council.

“Soil stabilisation is a key focus and consideration for earthworks projects such as this one, especially as environmental regulations continue to play a significant role in how many strategic regeneration projects are delivered.

“We have over two decades of experience of delivering innovative and cost-effect solutions for our clients, making us the natural partner for this project.”
