Tilbury Douglas has handed over another scheme in the education sector after completing a project to modernise The Cedars Academy in Birstall, Leicestershire
The redevelopment of the academy, part of the Lionheart Academies Trust, includes the construction of a new science block, refurbishment of a sports hall and changing rooms, and new catering facilities.
The works at the 11-19-year co-educational school were undertaken on a ‘live’ operational site and during the lockdown periods due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The project builds upon Tilbury Douglas’s successful partnership with the Department for Education. In 2017, Tilbury Douglas secured a place in all eight lots for the mid-value band of the DfE’s new £8 billion construction framework.
The company has also worked with the DfE for more than 20 years – successfully delivering more than 30 Priority School Building Programme and Free School projects.
A ‘hub for our pupils and our local community’
During the construction process, Tilbury Douglas also supported the school by sponsoring the Academy’s North Hub Careers Event, which was attended by over 450 pupils from local secondary schools. Tilbury Douglas colleagues gave an insight into the various roles and routes into the construction industry.
Laura Sanchez, executive principal for The Cedars Academy, said: “The Cedars Academy is privileged to be based on a large site in Birstall.
“Our state-of-the-art science facilities have improved the education our pupils receive. We have a newly refurbished sports hall and dining facilities that are used by pupils and in the evening by local community groups.
“As part of the Lionheart Academies Trust, we recognise that educational excellence and holistic development are the two cornerstones of successful education.
“The campus has been transformed over several years, and it is somewhere we can all be very proud of.”
Simon Butler, managing director for Tilbury Douglas in the Midlands, added: “We are delighted to hand over another successful scheme in the education sector.
“The improved facilities will provide an enhanced learning environment for pupils and illustrates our expertise and experience in delivering education projects.”
