Balfour Beatty has been appointed by Transport for London to deliver the new London Underground network track renewals contract, valued at up to £220m over four years

The track renewals contract will ensure the continued reliability of the 1,047 kilometer London Underground network; investing in critical assets and the delivery of strategic enhancements such as renewing 13 kilometers of ballasted track and associated drainage, signalling, traction power and rail conductor works.

Balfour Beatty was first appointed to deliver track renewals on behalf of Transport for London in 2010, with the contract further extended in 2016 for an additional two years.

Balfour Beatty’s detailed knowledge and experience of London Underground’s infrastructure and systems, as well as its commitment to championing innovation, was instrumental in securing the contract.

Throughout the programme of works, Balfour Beatty will introduce new measures and technologies such as remote surveying systems and viewing software to generate significant efficiencies while continuing to safely deliver the highest standard of work and reducing any potential disruption to the travelling public.

Mark Bullock, Balfour Beatty’s Chief Executive Officer for its Rail and Utilities business commented: “This award is testament to our continued focus on driving innovative solutions that deliver sustainable, safer rail infrastructure at reduced cost.

“Utilising our deep knowledge and unrivalled expertise of the rail infrastructure market, we will continue to upgrade this renowned underground network and keep London moving.”

Caroline Sheridan, London Underground’s Director for Renewals & Enhancements added: “Track maintenance and renewal is an essential part of keeping London moving. This contract will help us to continue to provide better, more reliable journeys for our customers, while continuing to drive staff safety.”

Works are due to commence in April 2019 with an option to extend the contract for a further six years in 2023. At peak, the project will employ a workforce of 300, including a number of apprenticeship and graduate opportunities.
