A recent survey from RLB UK and Operance has shown that 27% of the construction industry was unprepared for  the Building Safety legislation

Digital information platform Operance, and construction and property managing consultant RLB UK have released the findings of a survey regarding the construction industry and the Building Safety legislation.

The survey was to determine the key issues regarding the legislation and how to tackle them.

“Everything has changed but nothing’s changed”

The survey found several key points, mainly that 27% of the industry is still unprepared for the changes made by Building Safety legislation, and 23% of the industry feeling that the industry as a whole still needs to catch up.

95% of the participants said that they knew about the required competence level from the Building Safety legislation, however, in a roundtable discussion, those asked stated that there was still a lot of uncertainty in the definition of competency.

32% of those surveyed said that they felt the industry did not have enough ‘competent resource’ to deliver the building safety regime, but a third of participants believed that the industry’s digital infrastructure is suitable to the task.

86% believe that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be fundamental in building data management and security.

Building Safety legislation’s golden thread

One of the key issues found with the changes made by the Building Safety legislation was that of information management.

The roundtable discussion found that there was a lack of joined-up systems throughout the building lifecycle, and there was a lack of knowledge on what golden thread information actually needs to be recorded.

The national head of health & safety services at RLB, Samantha Mepham, said: I think there are still some uncertainties around how much it’s going to cost to go through a gateway and how long it’s going to take because the regulation hasn’t really been tested yet. I think really the solution is to go in with your eyes open and be prepared.”
