Interim director of the Building Safety Regulator Philip White will take on the role permanently as the regulatory body is set to become fully operational next year
HSE’s director of building safety, Philip White, will continue in his current position leading the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) on a permanent basis.
Having worked to establish the BSR within HSE since Peter Baker’s departure in April 2023, this permanent appointment will provide continuity for the programme at a integral stage of development and realisation.
From April 2024, registered building inspectors and building control approvals will be handled by the BSR, as well as calling in buildings for assessment and issuing Building Assessment Certificates.
Philip White has been with HSE for nearly four decades
Previous roles include head of HSE’s operational strategy division and chief inspector of construction.
As HSE’s director of building safety. Philip will continue working closely with BSR’s statutory industry and resident committees to ensure both industry and residents are heard at the heart of the new regime. He will also continue in his duties as chief inspector of buildings.
HSE gave a glowing prognosis of Philip’s new permanent role, saying that his “extensive regulatory experience and proven leadership will be vital to the success of the BSR in the coming years, ensuring the strength of HSE continues to be brought to bear in creating an effective regulator that’s fit for purpose for the future.”
Keeping the BSR on course for a culture change
Philip White commented on his new role:“We have achieved so much already in establishing the BSR, including successfully meeting crucial milestones and agreed timelines, but there is more we must deliver.
“I hope my permanent appointment will ensure the BSR programme has the continuity of leadership it will need at a vital stage of developing the new regulatory regime.”
