The UK BIM Framework, the overarching approach to implementing information management using building information modelling (BIM) in the UK, has been revamped
The UK BIM Framework is a free online resource, developed and maintained by nima and BSI.
It sets out standards, guidance, checklists and FAQs to help UK individuals and organisations understand the fundamental principles of information management using BIM.
The latest update launched to coincide with Digital Construction Week in London on 5-6 June 2024.
Improvements made to the UK BIM framework
The upgrade to the framework includes:
- New branding to make a clearer graphical connection between the overall framework and the underpinning guidance
- Updated content of the guides to ensure alignment with recently released standards in the ISO 19650 series
- Enhanced presentation, navigation and search facilities – including an artificial intelligence (AI) capability to improve user experience
- Better opportunities for user and community engagement on the site.
The UK BIM Framework is recommended in UK Government construction strategy documents
These include the Construction Playbook and the TIP Roadmap to 2030.
An ongoing review of the TIP Roadmap’s ‘Information Management Mandate’ will be likely to further embed the Framework in digital practices across the lifecycle of built and managed assets.
Nima chair and leader of the IMM review group Dr Anne Kemp OBE, said: “We want the new IMM approach to define the necessary next steps and to provide resources – such as the UK BIM Framework – that will help individuals and organisations support the necessary changes.”
The guidance has moved to an online platform provider powered by Morta
The shift has provided the opportunity to refresh the ‘look and feel’ of the online resources and to review and update the content.
The switch to Morta provides the foundation to increase user and community engagement and collaboration.
The Framework now contains an embedded form that users can complete to provide comments on the guidance alongside suggestions for development, with plans to extend this in the future.
Mo Shana’a, founder and CEO of Morta, said: “The UK BIM Framework guidance is one of the best examples we’ve seen of the power of community and collaboration across the industry, and we are excited to support in making the knowledge and information within it more accessible for the industry.”
