‘Data is the new oil’ – this was a phrase used by Teodora Kaneva, head of Smart Infrastructure and Systems at TechUK, at the recent Interchange Conference.
Although she caveated that she disliked the saying, it has some merit. Data is now a coveted resource, precious, but not finite like oil.
‘As data powers applications like self-driving cars, wearables, and satellites, it simultaneously generates even more data. Unlike oil, data is not used up when it’s collected.’
Data is more like capital—we lend or invest it in the hope it will deliver returns. It takes refining to be valuable, but its value increases each time it is used. At Manchester Central on the 27th and 28th of February, the role of data in collaborative working and moving the infrastructure industry forward was the hot topic.

The Interchange Conference utilised the hashtag #bethechange, encouraging a push towards an ‘integrated, decarbonised and resilient transport ecosystem that puts a premium on the quality of movement of people and goods.’
The conference’s success was achieved through the combination of three innovative events – TIP Live, the ITS UK Conference and STB Conference – as well as talks from keynote speakers, sneak peeks of some brand-new technology, and interesting round table discussions.
The conference offered a wealth of knowledge, with speakers from major public and private sector stakeholders across the transport, energy, property and technology sectors taking part.
