Balfour Beatty have started implementing human recognition technologies within various aspects of their projects
Balfour Beatty have started to mandate and use human recognition cameras within certain machineries and plant operations, making them the first Tier 1 contractor in the UK to do so.
The move comes based on the latest Work Related Fatal Injuries report, by the Health and Safety Executive. The report puts the construction industry at the top for fatal injuries, and 18% of these caused by being struck by moving vehicles.
The cameras will increase safety
Balfour Beatty has a mission, titled Zero Harm, which has mandated the new use of human recognition cameras to contribute to its 65% reduction of at-fault incidents.
The mandate was brought into effect in June 2024, and will subsequently be rolled out to supply chain partners, becoming the standard in 2025.
The design will bring more safety to blind spots in the workspace, as they will detect human forms and sound an alarm to alert those nearby to potential risks.
Balfour Beatty’s human recognition technology also implements a digital thumbs-up system, whereby machines can be temporarily disabled, allowing individuals to approach. This will be indicated by a sign that displays a no-entry symbol, but changes to a green thumbs-up when safe.
The technology will be applied to excavators that weigh over 13 tonnes, forward tipping dumpers weighing over 6 tonnes, articulated dump trucks weighing over 9 tonnes, rollers weighing over 13 tonnes, and telehandlers, dozers, and wheeled loaders.
