The RPS Group has appointed COWI to assist in delivering sustainable heat to homes and buildings in Dublin’s Docklands

COWI, a global engineering consulting group, has been appointed by the RPS Group to act as a technical advisor to delivering sustainable heat in Dublin City Council’s Dublin District Heating Project.

The project is intended to bring an up-to-date and sustainable heating network to Dublin, and contribute to Ireland’s long-term climate goals.

Waste energy will be used to deliver sustainable heat

The Dublin Waste to Energy (DWtE) facility will be utilised to provide heat to Dublin’s Poolbeg, Ringsend, and Docklands area, reducing the use of fossil fuels to create energy.

COWI will also be responsible for providing expertise in tunnelling for heat network pipes under the river Dodder.

As COWI is already experienced in Danish heat networks, they will be providing expertise on conceptual and preliminary designs for the energy centre and network hydraulics, among other aspects.

COWI will provide knowledge for Phase 1 of the project

The first phase of the project will see the DWtE facility be connected to the Poolbeg Peninsula, including North Lotts, the Grand Canal Dock Strategic Development Zone (SDZ), and the Poolbeg SDZ.

Later in the project there will be the opportunity to use heat captured from other industrial facilities, further providing sustainable heat to the Poolbeg Peninsula.

Damian McGirr, director at COWI UK, said: “We’re thrilled to harness our legacy in heat networks to support the adoption and acceleration of waste heat projects in Ireland. This project has the potential to showcase what is possible nationwide and at COWI we are committed to driving the uptake of waste heat projects for a more sustainable future. Projects like this are invaluable not only in achieving our sustainability goals but also in advancing the global energy transition.”
