HS2 has launched a new construction apprenticeship, set to commence on July 12. 24 brand-new apprenticeship positions will be available

The construction apprenticeship is aimed at college graduates looking to further their education while earning a living. With no age restrictions, these roles are equally well-suited for individuals seeking a career change.

Prior industry experience is not needed, and applications are open to all residents of Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, and Oxfordshire who are currently unemployed.
The two-week pre-employment training programme starting on June 12th is designed to help candidates decide if this career path suits them. It offers a practical understanding of the responsibilities involved in these roles.

HS2 close in on goal of 2000 apprenticeships

HS2 has employed 1,126 new recruits via various apprenticeship programmes. They are steadily progressing towards their goal of 2,000 apprenticeships. A wide range of courses, ranging from intermediate to degree level, are offered in various fields, such as carpentry, cyber security, tunnelling operatives, and environmental technicians.

“Over 1,200 people have already secured a HS2 construction apprenticeship, and we’re delighted that 24 new candidates are set to benefit from this investment. Those who complete the programme will secure a nationally recognised qualification and valuable industry experience on Europe’s biggest infrastructure project,” said Jhen-Nel Swanston, HS2’s Skills Manager for the region.

The positions are divided into two distinct career paths. There are twelve apprenticeships for Level 2 Steelworkers and twelve apprenticeships for Level 2 Formwork in carpentry/joinery. Both roles involve a combination of studying at The Skills Centre in Newton Purcell, Oxfordshire, for a period of 18-24 months, depending on the individual’s progress.

Successful candidates will play an important role in supporting HS2’s construction programme, which spans from the Chilterns to North Warwickshire. They will have the opportunity to receive guidance and support from a team of world-leading engineers, enhancing their skills and knowledge in the field.

The construction apprenticeship programme is funded by the AEB

All costs of the HS2 construction apprenticeship will be covered by EKFB and the Government’s Adult Education Budget (AEB). The programme has also received support from EKFB’s labour providers, namely Carmichael, Danny Sullivan Group, McGinley, Reliable Contractors, Venesky-Brown, and VGC.

“This programme aligns perfectly with our aim to transform lives by providing access to local training and career opportunities in construction,” said Jon Howlin, CEO of the Skills Centre.

“Working in collaboration with EKFB’s labour partners, The Skills Centre is proud to be supporting this opportunity for people across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire to launch and grow a career in formwork or steel fixing,” he continued.

More information on the construction apprenticeship can be found on HS2’s online jobs board. Applications for both roles close on Saturday, 1 July 2023.
