A modular building specialist who launched a competition for one of the hundreds of RAAC-affected schools to win an Actis-insulated classroom has named the winner – and starts work on the project this month
After sifting through applications from schools outlining how a free classroom would benefit their pupils, Woolacombe School in Devon, an accredited ‘school of character’, has been selected as the lucky winner.
Although in a slight deviation from the original brief, the school’s condemned 1970s/80s building, overlooking the Atlantic, is not affected by RAAC, but had reached the end of its natural life and was beyond economical repair.
Insulation specialist Actis will supply the project’s insulation element free of charge: 130m2 of 140mm Hybris.
The old classroom will be replaced with a modular alternative in four weeks
The work will see the BGR Modular Classrooms team remove the existing condemned classroom and replace it with a carbon-neutral state-of-the-art alternative – all within just four weeks!
Richard Burns, MD of BGR Modular Classrooms’ parent company BGR Group, said Woolacombe School, which educates children from pre-school up to year 6, was chosen because some pupils had to have lessons in the village hall once their classroom was declared no longer fit for purpose.
BGR has used Actis Hybris honeycomb-style insulation in all its classrooms and garden buildings for several years.
