Balfour Beatty has been chosen as one of the top ten preferred companies for SSEN Transmission’s Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment framework
This framework aims to improve onshore transmission infrastructure as part of SSEN’s ‘Pathway to 2030’ network upgrade plan, which is worth around £10bn.
Over the next few months, specific contracts detailing the work to be done and its value will be assigned.
Balfour Beatty’s will be involved in upgrading the transmission network in northern Scotland by working on overhead lines, underground cables, and substations. Work is due to be completed by 2030.

The Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment will help towards net-zero targets
The Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment framework is a significant improvement for the transmission network. The programme will play a vital role in achieving the renewable energy and climate change goals set by both the UK and Scottish Governments for 2030.
The Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment framework will also improve future energy practices by allowing the transfer and distribution of cost-effective, locally produced low-carbon energy.
Balfour Beatty’s were chosen for their expertise in onshore electricity transmission projects. This selection follows Balfour Beatty’s previous appointment by SSEN Transmission in 2019. They were chosen to handle the ongoing first and second phases of overhead line projects in the West of Scotland.
Providing Scotland with reliable power
Balfour Beatty is also working on a new 400-kilovolt substation with cabling and an overhead line in Peterhead. This work is part of SSEN Transmission’s guarantee to provide a reliable power supply to the Northeast of Scotland.
