One of Scotland’s largest construction companies, City Building, has renewed its membership with the national police crime prevention initiative, Secured by Design (SBD)
City Building provides a range of repairs and maintenance, manufacturing construction and refurbishment activities across the public, private and third sectors.
It also provides the largest construction craft apprenticeship programme in Scotland and operates Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi), one of the largest supported manufacturing businesses in Europe. RSBi employs over 250 people, more than 50% of whom have a disability.
City Building was presented with a Queen’s Award for promoting opportunity through social mobility
The company was presented with its third Queen’s Award for Enterprise as part of a prestigious civic reception in the City Chambers. The Promoting Opportunity award recognises the firm’s excellence in promoting opportunity through social mobility.
It is the first-ever construction firm and only the fourth business in Scotland to achieve the Investor in Young People (IYP) Platinum accreditation, awarded in May 2022.
The construction company is also Scotland’s largest employer of apprentices
The company is Scotland’s largest employer of apprentices, with around 200 apprentices on its books. It is also the industry’s largest employer of female craft trade apprentices, with one of the highest pass-out rates for apprentices at 94%.
The partnership has played a vital role in the protection and safety of City Building projects
Alan Burns, executive director of City Building, said: “The ongoing partnership between City Building and Secured by Design has played a vital role in the protection and safety of all City Building projects.
“By renewing City Building’s membership with the scheme, we are signalling an ongoing commitment to deterring and preventing crime and antisocial behaviour surrounding City Building sites. We will also create tangible benefits to both City Building as a company and the wider community that we serve.
“We are looking forward to continuing our work with Secured by Design in the coming years.”
SBD national lead, Kenny McHugh, added: “I am delighted that City Building have renewed their Secured by Design membership. They are a highly successful business who deliver a wide range of high quality construction and manufacturing operations, including design and build construction projects, new house building and major refurbishment projects across both the public and private sectors. I am looking forward to working with them over the coming years”.
