Des O’Rourke, who co-founded Laing O’Rourke in 1978 with his brother Ray, passed away on Wednesday after a short illness

Two years young than his brother Ray, Des O’Rourke co-founded R O’Rourke & Son in 1978, which would eventually become the UK’s largest private construction company Laing O’Rourke after merging with John Laing Plc in 2001.

Des and his brother were deputy co-chairs on the company board. Ray O’Rourke recently stepped down from the Group chief executive officer, with his son Cathal taking up the role.

The family released a statement on Wednesday (17 July):

“It is with deep sadness that Des O’Rourke’s family confirm his passing earlier today.

“Des had been ill for a short period, and he passed away surrounded by his immediate and extended family.

“The O’Rourke family now asks for privacy at this time to allow us to come to terms with this loss.

“May Des rest in peace.”
