Campaign group ‘Save Our South Bank’ has announced a petition against Michael Gove’s decision to approve the £700m ITV Studios redevelopment
Campaigners are set to take legal action against Michael Gove’s decision to approve the redevelopment of the former ITV Studios on London’s South Bank.
The proposed redevelopment of the former ITV Studios is spearheaded by Mitsubishi Estate and CO-RE and was approved by Lambeth Council and Sadiq Khan in 2022.
It seeks to transform the former headquarters into offices and retail spaces, replacing the existing buildings with a 26-storey tower linked to a 13-storey block.
However, the proposed development has drawn criticism from the local South Bank community due to its size and close position to several heritage and post-war listed buildings.
Lambeth Council ignored the impact on local residents
Save Our South Bank commented: “We acknowledge the need for the redevelopment of this site. However, in such a treasured area of London for locals and tourists alike, neighboured by listed IBM and National Theatre buildings, the design must protect and enhance rather than dominate its surroundings.
“Decision-makers Lambeth Council failed to take onboard the impact this build will have on local people. They have ignored suggestions for a smaller design that complements the surrounding area and adds value, for the local community and London as a whole.”
Save Our South Bank is seeking to raise £15,000 for legal action.
The development will impact wellbeing and mental health
A resident remarked on the proposed development to Lambeth Council, stating: “…People’s lives will be ruined and issues with health, general wellbeing and harmful impact on mental health will last for years & years ahead.”
