Global insulation products manufacturer Knauf Insulation will invest around €200m (£171.5m) in a new rock mineral wool factory to serve the UK market

The rock mineral wool factory will have a capacity in excess of 100,000 tonnes and will utilise cutting-edge, low-carbon electric melting technology as part of Knauf’s commitment to sustainable, non-combustible insulation solutions.

The new factory and Knauf’s existing plants in Cwmbran, Monmouthshire; St Helens, Merseyside; and Queensferry, Flintshire, will address the market’s growing need for insulation solutions with ultra-low embodied carbon.

Knauf Insulation operates 28 manufacturing facilities in 15 countries, turning over €15.4bn (£13.2bn) in the latest financial year and employs around 600 people in the UK.

Knauf Insulation is increasing investment in its UK operations

Knauf Insulation’s managing director for Northern Europe, Neil Hargreaves, said: “Following the €50m+ investment across our two UK glass mineral wool plants in 2023/4, this represents another exciting development for the business and our valued customers, as well as a further sign of confidence from Knauf Group in the future growth of the UK and Northern European mineral wool markets.

“The investment represents a step change in the capacity, capability, and sustainability of our UK rock mineral wool solutions, whilst significantly contributing towards Knauf Group’s ambitious sustainability goals.”

Knauf Insulation is currently discussing the best location for the facility with the relevant authorities, with the new rock mineral wool factory planned to complete in 2026.
