Nottingham-based contractor J Tomlinson appointed administrators on 10 July 2023, leading to over 400 redundancies across nine offices
As well as its Nottingham head office, J Tomlinson has a West Midlands base in Sutton Coldfield and offices in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Wigan, Derby, Sheffield, Doncaster, Wakefield and Bullwell.
The latest accounts information from September 2023 showed a turnover of £106m (an increase from £95m the previous year) and a pre-tax loss of £657,000 (less than the previous year).
The Nottingham fixture was contracted to several projects around the city and had previously completed the £3.7m Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue base on London Road, the National Justice Museum’s redevelopment project and was appointed to the £4.5m Portland Building redevelopment at the University of Nottingham.
All but a few remaining staff have been made redundant
The company employed 460 staff at the time of the September 2021 accounts and owed £17.7m to trade creditors.
J Tomlinson’s website proudly mentions having supported 46 graduates, apprentices and trainees whose fates are unknown.
Founded in the 1950s in Beeston, the business said that “hyper-inflation” and long-term maintenance contracts, which were “priced pre-Covid” had led to the financial collapse.
The remaining J Tomlinson staff will assist administrators
Raj Mittal and Nathan Jones of specialist business advisory firm FRP have been appointed to handle the company’s next steps.
Mittal said: “Despite its scale and the success achieved across a number of its divisions, the severe impact of Covid and recent inflationary pressures meant that J. Tomlinson was not in a financial position to continue trading and so we have had to make the difficult decision to cease operations.
“We’re now assessing options on next steps and have started our engagement with clients and creditors regarding ongoing projects and liabilities. We are providing support for affected staff in making applications to the Redundancy Payments Service.”
