Sir Robert McAlpine has begun the final phase of the Monkwearmouth Hospital redevelopment project, due to complete in January 2024

The Monkwearmouth Hospital redevelopment project, which will create a new entrance and office building at the Sunderland hospital, has commenced the final phase of construction.

Sir Robert McAlpine will carry out the construction of a 3,237 sq. m, three-storey building for Monkwearmouth Development Ltd “MDL” (a Joint Venture between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures Limited “SRMCV”, and Argon Property Development Solutions Limited “APDS”).

The construction works commenced last month and are scheduled to be completed in January 2024.

Connectivity and green spaces have been integrated into the design

Close to Sunderland’s city centre, the new building will provide a welcoming front entrance to the main outpatient facilities on the existing hospital site.

In addition to the new entrance, reception area and public café, the new accommodation will include flexible open-plan workspaces and breakout areas, with consultants’ admin offices on upper floors.

The building will also comprise a new administration hub, and crisis call services for the hospital, as well as a new community café for employees and visitors.

In addition to a replacement tree-lined staff car park, the development proposals also include level access and a landscaped piazza area and memorial garden; transforming the existing parking area that fronts Newcastle Road.

The Monkwearmouth Hospital redevelopment will deliver improved facilities to one of the largest mental health and disability trusts in England

MDL has been appointed to this work through SRMCV’s place on Pagabo’s Developer Led Framework, a nationwide procurement framework available for public sector organisations that focuses on delivering social value with each development.

MDL is working with NTW Solutions Limited, a limited company established by Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, to provide premises that will enable NTW Solutions to deliver improved facilities and a range of important services to the Trust.

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest mental health and disability Trusts in England.

Mark Gibson, regional managing director at Sir Robert McAlpine, said on the Monkwearmouth Hospital redevelopment:

“We’re really pleased to be working on a development that will support much-needed mental health provision in the area, creating spaces that are more accessible for hospital users and allow for more productive work by essential workers in the building.”
