Morgan Sindall have been awarded a contract by Walsall council, worth £32m, for the construction of a waste recycling and transfer station
The waste recycling centre will be located in Walsall, Middlemore Lane, on the six-hectare brownfield site of the former McKechnie Brass Ltd.
The project will also be preceded by soil re-engineering, through the use of lime and cement stabilisation techniques and surface water management.
The centre will bring a huge increase to waste management throughput
With 19 bays, each of which can hold two skips, the waste recycling centre will have a throughput of 40,000 tonnes per annum (TPA), and the transfer station will be able to accomodate 125,000 TPA.
Morgan Sindall’s waste station will also include weighbridges, service yards, ventilation systems, and facilities for office and operational staff, including office buildings and welfare facilities.
Morgan Sindall will commit to sustainable construction
The contract awarded to Morgan Sindall is the latest in 2024, as the company was awarded a contract to upgrade hospitals in Essex in May.
Morgan Sindall’s strategy includes a commitment to sustainable construction, with the 10-tonne carbon challenge, which consists of working to reduce the carbon produced in Morgan Sindall’s constructions by 10-tonnes through implementing solutions in the supply chain and construction.
The project is expected to be completed within 64 weeks, and was procured by Pagabo’s Major Works Framework.
Richard Fielding, area director for Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “Waste management facilities are a crucial part of our everyday infrastructure, and through this partnership with Walsall Council and Pagabo we’re delivering high-quality, sustainable infrastructure to meet the needs of the local community.
“Our team’s intelligent solutions approach has seen the project save over 350 tonnes of carbon, so we’re not only delivering sustainable infrastructure, but delivering it in the most environmentally friendly way possible.”
Elliott Talbot, framework manager at Pagabo, said: “We’re always especially pleased to play a part in bringing forward schemes that work towards significant strides in sustainability. This contract award is a great step forward for Walsall Council, with the new facility set to make a difference to people across the area with access to better waste and recycling facilities – along with the reuse shop further increasing the social value from the project for the community.”
The contract also comes as the second in a recently planned sustainability upgrade for Walsall, as Hitachi Zosen Inova was appointed the principal contractor for an energy recovery facility.
