Sir Michael Lyons has been appointed the chair of the New Towns Taskforce, with support from Dame Kate Barker
The New Towns Taskforce has been established with Sir Michael Lyons as its chair, with deputy chair going to Dame Kate Barker.
The rest of the taskforce will now be built by the two.
The New Towns Taskforce will deliver on the Government’s long term vision
The New Towns Taskforce has been given the job of laying out new towns in what the Government is calling “the largest housebuilding programme since the post-war period.”
Each development the task force decides on will have at least 10,000 new homes, but many will exceed this.
The key features for the homes are to be high quality, but remain affordable in an effort to allow as many working people as possible to own their own homes.
The developments will be a mixture of standalone towns, and extensions to existing settlements.
Rachel Reeves and Angela Rayner commented on the New Towns Taskforce
Angela Rayner said: “Our new towns will deliver housing fit for the future, shaping new communities with real character that people can be proud to call home.
“With Sir Michael in the driving seat, I know his Taskforce will work together with local people to help us decide on the right places for these new towns, delivering more homes, jobs and green spaces.
“We are getting Britain building again and our long-term vision for a new generation of new towns will enrich the lives of working people in the years to come.”
Rachel Reeves said: “Getting Britain building is at the heart of our mission to grow the economy and make every part of the country better off.
“Alongside our landmark reforms to the planning system, this programme of new towns will kickstart economic growth and give businesses the confidence to invest.”
The New Towns Taskforce will be expected to submit a final report at the end of a 12 month period.
