Northstowe, Cambridgeshire, is a new town developed by Homes England, Keepmoat Homes, and Capital&Centric, featuring 3,000 new homes, with 50% affordable housing
Homes England, Keepmoat Homes, and Capital&Centric have signed an agreement of collaboration to accelerate the delivery of new town Northstowe, currently the largest new town in Britain being developed.
The agreement will allow the construction of 3,000 homes, 50% of which will be affordable housing.
This would exceed the Labour new town code’s target of 40%.
Agreement will ensure cheaper housing and economic sustainability
The agreement will ensure that those moving to the town will have access to quality homes for rental or to buy, without breaking the bank.
A town centre is also planned, giving local business a boost with 50,000m2 of commercial floorspace, and to provide the people with a social space.
Northstowe is being developed on the brownfield site of former RAF Oakington, and currently houses around 3,000 people across 1,400 homes, having brought in residents in 2017.
Affordable housing is a key point for the new town
Matthew Pennycook, minister of state (housing, communities, and local government) said: “We will get Britain building again and work is already under way to unlock thousands of new homes in Northstowe.
“This includes giving Homes England the tools they need to deliver the next phase in Northstowe town centre so we can build the quality homes that this local community desperately needs.”
The chair of Homes England, Peter Freeman, said: “This collaboration with Keepmoat and Capital&Centric will allow us to further our investment in supporting the local community, helping create new, quality, affordable housing and ensuring this emerging town is a vibrant place to live.”
Group development director at Keepmoat, Tim Wray, said: “Delivering quality new homes at this flagship site is a key element of bringing the community to life, and we are thrilled to strengthen our partnership with both Capital&Centric and Homes England to ensure this sustainable community continues to grow.”
Joint managing director for Capital&Centric, John Moffat, said: “Northstowe has all the makings of an exemplar new town, with inclusive community facilities and the sustainable new homes the UK so badly needs.”
