BAM has been chosen to oversee the £150m redevelopment of Darlington Station over the next two years

BAM will modernise Darlington station’s stairways and create a new state-of-the-art entrance hall.

Two new platforms will be added on the eastern side of the station, and a new car park will be installed by 2025.

The new car park will provide space for 600 cars, as well as disabled bays and electric car charging points. A transport interchange and gateway entrance connected to Central Park will also be added to the station’s east side.

BAM will work with several partners

BAM will work alongside Network Rail, LNER, the Department for Transport, and Darlington Borough Council, as well as the developer Willmott Dixon.

‘BAM is delighted to work in collaboration with Network Rail, the Tees Valley Combined Authority, and other partners on this transformative project at Darlington Station,” said Nissar Mohammed, rail director for BAM.

“The new-look station will provide a fantastic modern entrance to Darlington, transforming the passenger experience. We look forward to engaging with the local community and suppliers in the North East to ensure the project provides maximum benefit to the region,” he continued.

Celebrating 100 years of Darlington Station

The development is set to be completed by the 2025 Stockton and Darlington Railway bicentennial celebrations. Council authorities have organised a nine-month festival that will include rail journeys, exhibitions, and visual arts.

‘Giving Darlington the gateway it deserves is vital to its future and the wider region’s need for better connections,” commented Tees Valley Mayor, Ben Houchen.

“Our rail network has been restrained for too long – and this immense project with its cutting-edge interchange will cut journey times and give Darlington a station it can be proud of. It will also boost investment and make our region even more attractive to investors,” he concluded.
