Kier has been appointed to deliver a three-year programme of Birmingham hospital upgrades, covering works at Good Hope Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and Solihull Hospital

The University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust (UHB) has chosen Kier to deliver a three-year programme of hospital upgrades, procured through the P23 Framework.

Aiming to create a modern and clinically efficient estate by 2026, the works will cover updating Good Hope Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and Solihull Hospital.

It follows Kier’s delivery of the £97m treatment centre at Heartlands, which won Building Project of the Year at the Constructing Excellence Midlands Awards in June 2023.

Multiple upgrades will be made to the Princess of Wales Maternity Unit at Heartlands Hospital

Kier will work with UHB on the estate strategy, with development at the Princess of Wales Maternity Unit at Heartlands Hospital as a specific focus.

Upgrades will be made to inpatient accommodation and major medical equipment, as well as delivering ongoing minor works and maintenance to scanning facilities, induction suite, alterations to delivery rooms and a new bereavement zone.

Fire safety measures will be brought to modern standards

Current inpatient ward facilities will be enhanced with new ensuite facilities, life refurbishments and improved access to Plant Rooms.

Replacement fire doors and fire stopping works will ensure safety standards are up to date.

Continuing Kier’s success with hospital upgrade programmes

Tony Shenton, regional director for Kier Construction Eastern & Midlands, said: “Following our successful delivery of the award-winning Heartlands Treatment Centre for UHB, we are delighted that the trust has again appointed Kier to deliver key works across their estate.

“Our extensive experience of creating state-of-the-art healthcare buildings will allow us to deliver upgrades that have an immediate impact on the quality of community healthcare. We look forward to continuing our successful relationship with the trust and supporting them to deliver excellent care for the community.”
