Winvic Construction has begun work on road improvements in Lincolnshire under the Lincolnshire County Council highways framework contract
Winvic will create new infrastructure assets and improve existing infrastructure in Lincolnshire over a four-year period. The project is part of Lincolnshire’s ‘Levelling Up‘ road improvement projects.
This includes improvements to the Marsh Lane roundabout on the A16 and the improvement of active travel links near Wyberton Low Road in Boston. The development has a combined cost of £5.7m. Construction began on May 16 and is anticipated to be finished within six months.
What changes will be made to the roads?
The Marsh Lane roundabout improvements aim to reduce congestion, improve safety, and ensure compatibility with future A16 upgrades. This includes widening 3,070 m2 of the carriageway on the approaches and the roundabout itself and expanding its diameter from 21.5m to 27m. Additionally, 410m of new drainage will be installed, and traffic signal infrastructure works will be carried out at the crossroad junction, covering 4,025 m2 of carriageway treatment works.
A new three-quarter mile active travel route will be built in Boston, specifically targeting the conflict between cyclists and HGVs on Marsh Lane. This will involve widening the pavements and introducing a new cycle lane.
The road improvements in Lincolnshire will cause some disruption
Temporary traffic management will be put in place on the A16, reducing the two-lane carriageway to one for up to ten weeks. Later in the project, temporary traffic signals and occasional night-time road closures will be used.
“As with any major road improvement project, some disruption on local roads is inevitable when work is underway. However, we’ll be making all efforts to keep traffic moving and maintain access to all businesses,” said Richard Davies, executive member for highways.
Both projects will receive £20m in funding from the ‘Levelling Up’ grant that the county council received in October 2021. The remaining funds will be used for four other projects, which involve improvements to Spalding’s A16/A151 Springfield Roundabout and A16/B1180 Greencell Roundabout.
“We have been extremely busy behind the scenes since we were awarded the highways framework contract by Lincolnshire County Council last year, ensuring we were fully prepared in advance of being awarded our first scheme,” said Rob Cook, director of civils and infrastructure at Winvic.
“Nearby communities, businesses and road users will be our priority, as well as keeping people safe. Our continued one-team working with the Council will help to ensure the programme is delivered swiftly and safely with as little disruption as possible,” he added.
Winvic was awarded the ‘General Works’ Lot by Lincolnshire County Council in April 2022. The company’s works on A and B-class roads in Lincolnshire will include constructing roundabouts, widening or dualling major highways, building bridges, performing service diversions, and installing drainage and street lighting.
