A Labour sustainability conference in Liverpool will debate how to sustainably construct the targeted 1.5 million new homes in tackling the housing crisis

A Labour sustainability conference will be held in Liverpool on Tuesday, September 24, to discuss sustainability aspects in the construction of 1.5 million new homes.

The panel will consist of two Labour MPs and industry experts.

The Labour sustainability conference will bring together industry experts

The panel will feature Naushabah Khan MP, the member of parliament for Gillingham and Rainham, and Mike Reader MP, member of parliament for Northampton South.

The panel also features CEO of the structural timber association, Andrew Carpenter, and Places for People’s group director for sustainability and policy, Branwen Evans.

Together this panel will discuss and explore timber as a sustainable material, and how it will speed up housebuilding, deliver high-quality and low-energy homes, and reduce the impact of the project on the planet.

The government has set ambitious targets

The target of 1.5 million homes over the course of Labour’s parliament is no small task, which is why the labour sustainability conference will discuss how to do it correctly.

It equates to around 300,000 homes per year, or 1,000 new homes every day.

At the same time, the government must focus on the economy, and sustainability to work towards net-zero.

Timber frames are a popular choice for sustainable construction, due to their very low carbon, saving around 16% during construction, and also saves time compared to other materials.

The timber manufacturing sector has the capacity to double their output to contribute towards 100,000 homes per year, a third of those needed.

Andrew Carpenter, CEO of the Structural Timber Association, said: “Structural timber is the sustainable answer to 1.5m homes – it offers speed of construction, reduces construction’s impact on the planet and delivers high quality low energy homes, built to last.

“The new Labour government has an incredible opportunity to rethink how we build this level of homes, sustainably to create great places to be proud of.  I look forward to putting this case forward at Labour’s first autumn conference as the new party of government.”
